Tottenham news: Gloom lifts as Mauricio Pochettino jokes after big Champions League win | Football | Sport

Mauricio Pochettino had hinted before this key Group B match against Red Star Belgrade that his job might be at risk unless results improved in this miserable spell for his Tottenham side.

But on Tuesday night he joked that he will be giving his players a day off on Wednesday – after being accused of overworking his Tottenham stars.

One point from two Group B outings before Tuesday night and a horrible 7-2 hammering by Bayern Munich three weeks ago had meant a dismal start for last year’s beaten finalists.

But as the electric Son Heung-min scored twice, Harry Kane also grabbed two and Erik Lamela netted one against the hapless Serbs, the crisis around the Lane seemed to have eased – for now.

Following the 5-0 win, Mauricio Pochettino said: “Now it is time to stay calm. This was a good result, but it is only three points and there are a lot of tough games ahead need to be solid.

“[On Wednesday] I will give my players a day off – to stop the rumours.

“I am pleased with the result. It was important for confidence and for another three points. But I feel good.

“It is only time that we we need to recover our best feeling. It is step by step to regain our confidence and perform the way we can perform. It is coming but the energy helped us tonight.

“Still we need to work hard, because we have three more games in this groupand they are going to be tough. It is still open but we are in a better position than last season.”

Tottenham – who had until Tuesday night won only three of their last 12 games – were ahead after only eight minutes when Kane glanced home.

Son was though the man who put his team firmly in command with two first-half goals, as first he half-volleyed home.

Then the South Korean finished expertly for his fifth goal of the season, when former Chelsea midfielder Marko Marin blundered.

Red Star rarely troubled the Tottenham defence, as Lamela added a fourth goal with a neat turn and then Kane slid home the fifth.
