Oti Mabuse and Kelvin Fletcher: Body language reveals Strictly pro’s ‘smart ploy’

Strictly Come Dancing 2019 live shows returned last night, with 12 celebrities and their professional dance partners taking to the dance floor. One of the stand out performances came from South African professional dancer Oti Mabuse and her celebrity dance partner, actor Kelvin Fletcher. The former Emmerdale star stunned the judges with his incredible performance of the Samba, after joining the show just two weeks ago when Jamie Laing had to pull out due to an injury. Late addition Kelvin left head judge Shirley Ballas “lost for words” and in need of a fan with his sensational Samba. The routine, performed to La Vida Es Un Carnaval by Celia Cruz, was full of energy and some very ambitious moves.

From shaking his hips and dancing while professional Oti was balanced between his legs, Kelvin, 35, had viewers in awe of his moves.

Many rushed to Twitter as they praised the actor on his amazing performance.

“WOW WOW WOW that was incredible! Such a great pairing… Oti and Kelvin for the final.. can’t wait for next week,” one wrote adding several flame emojis.

“I think @kelvin_fletcher first dance on @bbcstrictly has to be the best first dance ever doesn’t it!? #StrictlyComeDancing,” another said.

The performance certainly impressed the judges as well, with Kelvin and Oti receiving four eights – a record for any first show.

Body language expert Judi James analysed their dance, and she told that Kelvin has a great chance of going far on the show.

She said: “Kelvin is a guy who clearly knows all about work ethic and years spent in chilly barns in Emmerdale meant he grabbed the chance to come into the warmth of the ballroom spotlight again with both hands.”

Following the performance, the judges praised Kelvin, with Motsi Mabuse saying: “Oh my goodness! Kelvin! Well, are we not happy you stepped in, seriously you have good assets! Stop, stop, I’m talking about that spine, I’m talking about that hip rotation, I’m talking about that oozing that’s in your body.”

At the time, Oti could be seen proudly smiling, which Judi says could be part of the pro-dancer’s scheme on the show.

She continued: “Oti looked like a woman who had lit the blue touch-paper and stood back with Kelvin, who took off like a rocket with his sexy samba.

“She had clearly worked hard (and quickly) to get her stand-in partner to this level but her smart ploy was to then stand quietly smiling while he took the lion’s share of the praise.”

Judi added that the dance partners had great chemistry, saying: “At present their relationship looks ideal, with his total focus showing but his trait of turning to her with polite thanks referencing her quiet determination too.”

While Oti and Kelvin shone last night, their competitors Alex Scott and Neil Jones didn’t seem to get off to the best start.

Judi James explained that Neil could do with some help from his ex-wife Katya, as former footballer Alex appeared to dominate the performance.

She said: “Of course, the dream ticket would be for these two to get their hands round the glitterball after the distress of last year but Neil might need to borrow some of his ex Katya’s ‘roll up your sleeves and get stuck in’ grit with Alex as this week their scores were disappointing.”
